Has anybody seen Neil Henry?

The last we heard about the dean of the UC-Berkeley j-school was in October 2010 when he had been hospitalized for an undisclosed illness. If you know anything, please send us an e-mail.

There are certain things UC administrators cannot talk about because of privacy laws, HIPAA, etc. Posting something like this invites speculation and doesn’t serve anyone’s interest. The Department is in good hands and it is up to Neil, when he returns, to decide if he should discuss this with the campus community.

This is a journalism site. Stop finger wagging and tut-tutting. Neil Henry is a high-profile figure in American journalism and whether or not you think 'it serves anyone's interest' to write about his disappearing for months, the fact is that it is news.

UC administrators may be powerless to discuss what happened to Neil; but obviously it was Neil's choice to wrap his extended absence in secrecy. And that's exactly what provoked the initial curiosity.

Now he's taken a leave of absence, with pay, and the school has no dean. This may be a private medical matter, but to the extent public money is paying him while he recovers it becomes a public story about a limited purpose public figure.

People, I'd like to point out that we ourselves are all wrapped up in secrecy here...We've all chosen the "anonymous" option on these comments. So, please, give Neil a break unless you're willing to disclose your name.
